India’s direct tax collections rise 23% to Rs 8.11 lakh crore as non-corporate tax drives growth

New Delhi [India], August 11 (ANI): India's net direct tax collections rose 23.09 per cent year-on-year to Rs 8.11 lakh crore as of August 10, 2026, from Rs 6.59 lakh crore in the corresponding period last year, according to data released by the Income Tax Department.
The strong growth in direct tax collections was led by non-corporate taxes, securities transaction tax and corporate tax collections, pointing to a broad-based increase in tax receipts during the ongoing financial year.
Gross direct tax collections stood at Rs 9.55 lakh crore as of August 10, up 19.75 per cent from Rs 7.97 lakh crore recorded in the same period of 2025. After accounting for refunds, net collections stood at Rs 8.11 lakh crore.
Non-corporate tax collections, which include taxes paid by individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, firms, associations of persons, bodies of individuals, local authorities and artificial juridical persons, rose to Rs 5.07 lakh crore from Rs 4.11 lakh crore a year earlier.
This represented growth of around 23.4 per cent and made non-corporate tax the largest contributor to overall net direct tax collections during the period.
Net corporate tax collections also increased, rising to Rs 2.70 lakh crore from Rs 2.26 lakh crore in the year-ago period, a growth of around 19.8 per cent.
Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collections rose to Rs 33,823.74 crore from Rs 22,354.31 crore a year earlier. However, the data showed a marginal decline in net collections under other taxes.
Refunds during the period increased 3.79 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1.43 lakh crore, compared with Rs 1.38 lakh crore in the corresponding period last year.
The latest collection data indicate that direct tax revenues have maintained strong momentum in the early months of FY 2026-27, with both corporate and non-corporate segments contributing significantly to the increase.
The government's net direct tax collections had stood at Rs 6.59 lakh crore as of August 10, 2025. The increase in net direct tax collection this year represents an additional Rs 1.52 lakh crore in net revenue over the comparable period. (ANI)
