CWG 2026: President Murmu congratulates Asmita Dey, Harsh Singh on historic Judo golds

New Delhi [India], August 1 (ANI): The President of India, Droupadi Murmu on Friday congratulated Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh on their historic gold medal in judo at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026.
President Murmu praised their determination, skill, composure, and perseverance, describing their achievements as a proud moment for the nation and an inspiration for aspiring athletes, while wishing them continued success in bringing further honours to India.
Harsh Singh clinched the men's 60kg judo gold medal, defeating Australia's Joshua Katz by Waza-Ari (10-0) in a commanding final. Meanwhile, Asmita Dey secured the women's gold medal with a composed and determined performance, overcoming Canada's Heidi Quach by Yuko (2-1) to script a historic victory.
"Heartiest congratulations to Asmita Dey on creating history by becoming the first-ever Indian judoka to win a Gold Medal at Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your remarkable triumph is a shining example of determination, skill and perseverance. Your success will inspire many aspiring athletes to follow in your footsteps. May you continue to scale new heights," President Murmu wrote in an X post.


In another X post, President Murmu wrote, "Warmest congratulations to Harsh Singh on winning the Gold Medal in Judo at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your exceptional display of skill, composure and tenacity has earned India yet another glorious sporting moment. May you continue to bring greater honours to the nation."


Harsh produced a disciplined display to secure India's second judo gold medal of the Games after Asmita Dey's gold medal-winning performance in the 48kg judo earlier in the day.
The Vice President of India, CP Radhakrishnan, lauded Dey and Singh for their gold medal triumphs in judo at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing their victories as a testament to years of dedication and perseverance. He said their success has made the nation proud and will motivate future generations of Indian judokas.
"A glorious day for Indian judo! Many congratulations to Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh on winning Gold Medals in the Women's 48 kg and Men's 60 kg Judo events respectively at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Their outstanding performances are the result of years of hard work, discipline and determination. By standing atop the podium, they have brought great pride to the nation and set an inspiring example for aspiring judokas across the country. Wishing them continued success as they scale even greater heights and bring more laurels to India," VP Radhakrishnan wrote in an X post.


Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed Dey's historic gold medal triumph at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing her performance as a brilliant showcase of talent and determination. He extended his best wishes for her future achievements.
"Golden Glory for India! Applause to Asmita Dey for scripting history by winning the Gold Medal in Women's 48 kg Judo at the #CWG2026. You owned the turf with a dominating display of talent and enthralled the nation with your spectacular victory. Wishing you the best for your future endeavours," Amit Shah wrote in an X post.


The gold medal victories took India's overall gold tally at the Games to five. The country has now secured 19 medals in Glasgow, including five gold, nine silver and five bronze.
"India creates history with back to back Gold Medals in Judo. Hats off to you, Harsh Singh, for winning the Gold Medal in Men's 60 Kg Judo at the #CWG2026. The nation beams in pride at your grand achievement that you brought through peak sportsmanship and steely determination, enhancing India's glory," Shah wrote in an another X post.


India's gold medallists are Mirabai Chanu (women's 48kg weightlifting), Sharmila Dhankar (women's shot put F57), Dilip Gavit (men's 100m T47), Asmita Dey (women's 48kg judo) and Harsh Singh (men's 60kg judo). The country's silver medals have come through Rishikanta Singh, Muthupandi Raja, Gyaneshwari Yadav, Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Harjinder Kaur, Gulveer Singh, Murali Sreeshankar, Mohammed Basil and Lovepreet Singh, while bronze medals have been won by Jhandu Kumar, Bindyarani Devi, Shilpa K Shyla and Seema Kaliramna.
